Year 5

                                                         YEAR 5 Term 1

Welcome to all our new Year 5 pupils - we look forward to an enjoyable and successful year!

Our Term 1 topic is ‘Climb Every Mountain’. Later in the term, we will be looking at the geography of mountains and linking it with Computing, Art and Music. The children will also be learning to play the ukulele in lessons with Miss Watson.

In Maths, after some work on Roman Numerals, we will begin with a focus on place value and then move on to addition and subtraction methods as well as practising focused times tables. In English lessons this term, we will be starting with writing descriptions and stories based on our class text, ‘Fly, Eagle, Fly!’ Later in the term, we will be writing letters home from a mountaineer’s perspective. We will be linking our Destination Reader sessions to our topic on mountains.

Our focus this term, in Science, will mainly revolve around materials and their properties.

In RSHE/PSHE will be working well-being as well as similarities and differences, mindfulness and, on ‘Being me in my world’, which is a part of our JIGSAW scheme.

We will be reading and discussing different creation stories in RE.

You can support your child at home by ensuring that they read at least four times weekly, encouraging them to complete the weekly writing task in reading planners and, by helping them to practise any spellings and other tasks set.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.

PE is on a Thursday afternoon for 5MC and 5GH, each class will be swimming this year starting with 5SW this term – further details to follow.

Many thanks,

The Year 5 Team.
